Behind the Bricks: Turn 2 Repave — How Mason Private Locating Helped Keep IMS Safe
The Indianapolis Motor Speedway's iconic 2.5-mile oval isn't just a world-famous racing surface — it's a piece of motorsports history. In late 2025, IMS released an exciting four-part video series titled Behind the Bricks: Turn 2 Repave, giving fans an inside look at a critical track improvement project.
Before the first piece of equipment ever touched the pavement, Mason Private Locating (MPL) was proud to be on site to help ensure the project could move forward safely.
A Historic Project at an Iconic Venue: The Turn 2 Repave project addressed a long-standing bump at the exit of Turn 2, but it quickly became much more than a standard repaving job. As crews removed layers of asphalt, they uncovered original sections of the historic brick racing surface laid in 1909 — along with early track materials that hadn't been seen in generations.
IMS documented the entire process in a four-part video series, Behind the Bricks, showcasing the technical challenges, historical discoveries, and teamwork required to preserve the Speedway while preparing it for the future.
MPL's Role: Safety Before the Work Begins: Prior to construction starting, Mason Private Locating was on site to locate and mark underground utilities throughout the project area. This critical step helped protect workers, equipment, and infrastructure, allowing crews to focus on the repave and excavation with confidence.
Accurate utility locating is an essential part of damage prevention — especially on a site as historic and complex as Indianapolis Motor Speedway. MPL is proud to have played a role in helping make this high-profile project a safe and successful one.
